Picturehouse Acquires U.S. Rights to Controversial Biopic 'Gloria'

This movie was my most anticipated film of 2015 because it was the first biopic film of someone I listened to and actually followed musically. The film is the half life story of Gloria Trevi, a pop music idol from Mexico, and how she rose to fame blinded by love for her producer.

The acting was great, at time I felt like I was watching Gloria herself and not some actress. Both lead actors did a great job with their roles and people who know Gloria and Sergio would agree. Unfortunately other reviews think that everything was over the top and animated…but that was who Gloria Trevi was in real life. She was Madonna and Cyndi Lauper rolled into one person.

The only issue I truly had with the film was timelines. Two major timelines were portrayed incorrectly and as a Latin pop music fanatic like myself, it was big giant errors. First when Gloria is going on television for the first time the year was 1989. There is a young girl dressed in gold with a black and gold headband. That girl was supposed to be Lucero in her iconic 1982 record cover. In 1989, Lucero would have been grown up and the same age as Gloria.

The other mistake was when Gloria and Sergio are talking in the restaurant and he tells her that he could have “La Jarocha” sing the songs, he is referring to the pop singer, Yuri. Sergio had stopped working with Yuri in 1984. By 1989, Yuri had a successful career with Sony Music and was using bigger and more recognizable names.

To the everyday people, those facts are irrelevant, but I found them a little unnerving. But as a whole, I loved the film and glad the Gloria finally accepted and embraced the film on her life.
