March to Disney: Pocahontas (1995) | The Movie Rat

What the hell, Disney?

Are you going to tell me this “princess” story does not end with a happy ending? How could this be?

It took a very long time for us to watch Pocahontas, but when we did…we were disappointed. This Disney animated film is the story of the Indian princess and the torrid love affair with white man, John Smith. John Smith comes to the new world to find gold with a ship full of greedy white men. They invade the Indians’ land and wreck havoc. Well, John Smith is along for the ride, not really to destroy the land. He goes exploring and finds Pocahontas. She is so enamored by John Smith and he with her. Her family doesn’t agree and his own kind wants to kill the savages.

The film is beautiful, don’t get me wrong. On the animation side, the colors and scenery are brilliant and very three dimensional in a 2D work. The music is mediocre. Disney is known for their musical numbers, and Pocahontas falls short from the first song.

Ultimately, the movie did nothing for me and might rank low if I had to rate all the Disney animated films. Did I hate it? No. I just really didn’t see the appeal, nor do I see it for children either.
