No Way Out: the 1987 thriller that prophesied a deeply corrupt US government | Movies | The Guardian

The first movie on my young Kevin Costner double feature is the 1987 spy thriller, No Way Out. I was looking for 80’s films I had not seen and came across this film. After seeing how nice Kevin Costner looked when he was younger, I decided I might just do a double Kevin feature.

Kevin Costner stars as U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Farrell in a military and political cover-up film. The film also stars Gene Hackman and a very popular at the time, Sean Young. Young was the IT girl of the 80’s. Farrell meets Susan Atwell (Young) at a political formal gala and immediately falls for her. He doesn’t know she is the mistress of the Secretary of Defense David Brice (Hackman). Eventually, he finds out but is not okay with it. When she was about to break up with him, Brice confronts here and accidentally kills her. He tries to cover up the murder by blaming the Russians and enlists Farrell to help him.

I could go into the story even more, but I’d hate to give up spoilers. This movie screams 80’s, especially the music. Horrible 80’s pop music anytime there is a scenery shots like their drive through the countryside.

Film on the other hand was good. It was suspenseful and had me on the edge of my seat. Come to find out this film is based on the 1946 novel by Kenneth Fearing’s The Big Clock. Along the same lines, there is a 1948 film called The Big Clock that also is based on the book. Difference is the director of No Way Out, Roger Donaldson chose to use Washington setting to add a bit more suspense to the film.

Plus, who doesn’t like a young Kevin Costner. But…let me say that you need to watch til the end, you will be surprised at the ending. That is what makes a good suspense thriller.
