Way back when, I read the original novel on this film. From what I remember, they took a lot of liberties with this movie. With the popularity of sharksploitation films, The Meg hits both the seriousness of a adventure film and the craziness of the exploitation. This is why I liked it.
Believe me, this is no JAWS and can never even come close. The first part of the film contains the seriousness as the deep sea exploration teams uncover the Jurassic shark, the Megalodon. We don’t really get the true explanation of how and why we unearthed a shark from 23 to 3.6 million years ago.
Where the film goes off the rails and you realized this is not a serious shark film like The Shallows is when the mega shark heads to China and begins to snack on some Chinese food (LOL). This is when they give a nod to the shark of all sharks, Bruce… with a little dog named Pippin. How can you take it serious at this point?
I liked the combination of serious and fun in this film, which is why I gave it four stars. Much better than Sharknado.
