Aquaman (2018) - IMDb

Growing up, Aquaman has been my favorite DC character since I used to watch The Super Friends in the 70’s and 80’s. I always called him Gay Aquaman because he was a little softer than the comic book version that came afterward.

At first, I thought the casting of Jason Momoa was just a ploy to gain viewers from the popularity of Game of Thrones. As the promotional clips came about, I became a little more comfortable with the idea. After watching the film, I think the choice was a good one. Based on the comic books and the look of Momoa, I am thinking they based his character on the 90’s version of Aquaman volume five.

Aquaman, the movie, is an origin drive story line. Author Curry is born from a relationship between a lighthouse keeper in Maine and Atlanna, the queen of Atlantis, played by Nicole Kidman. Atlanna wanted to stay but after being attacked, she returned to Atlantis and left her new family. Come to Arthur all grown up, he is confronted by Mera (Amber Heard) to take is throne at the bottom of the ocean and stop Arthur’s younger half-brother, who is planning an attack on the main land in retaliation for polluting the oceans.

The origin story is pretty good. It was not filled with jokes on how he learns to be a super hero and his powers. Most of this probably happened when he was a young boy, but it was not relevant to the plot. They really didn’t even make Aquaman out of be a super hero either. Its a fight between good and evil which ultimately became a public service announcement for the conservation of our oceans and water worlds.

Overall, I was impressed with how they handled the film and hope that they can get a sequel in line for this character.
