Pet Sematary (2019) Review: How Does it Compare to Stephen King's 1983 Novel? - milk magazine

Here kitty, kitty, kitty. AHHH! Oh that was just the cat jumping out from behind something. That was the scary part of the film.

This version of Pet Sematary is a reboot of the original Pet Sematary from the 1989 film, based on the 1983 novel by Stephen King. With this reboot, the story took a bit of a turn from the original which changed up many things that you might have knew before.

Let’s chat with the idea that you don’t know squat about the book or the original movie. A doctor, his wife and two kids, Ellie and Gage, move to a small town in Maine from Boston. Young Ellie, while exploring the woods behind the house, sees a funeral procession of kids going to bury a beloved pet in a pet cemetery in the deep woods. When Ellie’s cat gets hit by a car, the neighbor shows the doctor the cemetery and tells him to bury the cat. The cat comes back, but not the same as before. Knowing this, when Ellie is killed, the doctor goes to the cemetery to bury his daughter.

Now, let’s stop before spoilers come into play. Based on the book, Gage is supposed to be the one killed. I don’t think the change in person made much difference in the story, but they did take a lot of liberties. Most of the suspense and freakishness of what Stephen King created was delivered via the typical scare tactics.

As with the first film, I was not a fan. This one did nothing for me either. I could take it or leave it.
