Pepe (1960)

The Many Rantings of John: OVP: Pepe (1960)

My solo movie of the weekend was Pepe… I started watching two others before this and was constantly interrupted or preoccupied that I could not focus enough, so after dinner I tried again.

After watching the film, “Cantinflas”, I took a chance on this. I also like Mexican cinema, so this kinda fits in the middle. Cantinflas is a character created by Mario Moreno in the golden age of cinema for Mexico and appeared in many movies and television shows.

They wanted to bring him up the the states, though I don’t think his style of comedy was what the American’s really wanted.

The film is funny and makes fun of Mexican culture but not really in a degrading way, more like the American’s just don’t get him that is why it is funny. There’s a lot of downtime in this film and was about an hour too long. At about 2.5 hours, the story did not need to be that long. With a million cameos by Hollywood’s elite, Columbia Pictures seemed to not care that it took so long to tell a basic story.

Overall, it wasn’t horrible to watch and I actually enjoyed it and might have enjoyed it more if it was shorter.
