Salsa (1988)

★★★★ Watched 03 Mar 2012

Puerto Rico

This movie was on my holy grail of laserdiscs and I just got my copy today after waiting almost 2 months to get in the mail, so I just had to watch it and make Elisabeth watch it.

The movie, not well known, stars Robby Rosa who was one of the members of the Puerto Rican pop group Menudo and anyone who knows me, knows that I was and still am a die hard Menudo fan. I will admit this to anyone. So, when this movie came out just after Robby left the group, it was a huge deal.

Saw it in the movies, owned the VHS, had the soundtrack, and now that I am a laserdisc collector, I had to get the laserdisc. Ha, some of the songs are on my iPod now still. Ok, coming back to this and watching almost 20 year laters you can see how bad this movie is.

The acting is horrible, even from the main star. The dancing is typical Kenny Ortega, once you’ve seen one you have seen them all. There is not much plot…typical Miami setting and Rosa’s character thinks that if he enters the Salsa dance contest his dreams of being someone would come true.

For nostalgia sake, I loved re-watching it. I sang along and had Elisabeth laughing at me the whole time. It was fun.
